Joy Kloman
My artistic practice is an exploration of temporality. The sourced vintage photographs referenced in my art are a black and white record of days that have passed. Utilizing old photos implies historical recurrence. In my figurative paintings and prints, I have added color, creating tension between past and present. The juxtaposition of monochromatic with luminous colors suggests forging new paths, whilst honoring heritage. My latest work depicts patterns of antique damask wallpaper enveloping figures; as if one is peering behind grandmother’s peeling patinaed walls, revealing a record of those once there. My larger series also includes figures obscured by ancient gingko leaves, entangled in overgrown vines, and enmeshed in foliage, which implies the cyclical nature of our existence. Capturing brief moments in time, my paintings suggest a sense of transience. My art addresses commonly catalogued occasions— delving into rites of passage, which cumulatively represent an epoch.
